Spomenici se ističu masivnošću i umjetničkom obradom, a njihova pozicija uz recentno katoličko groblje svjedoči o dugom kontinuitetu svetosti ovog prostora.
HTMLText_A778DA2A_D709_3533_41E8_378CB925D84C.html = The Kopošići necropolis near Ilijaš is one of the most significant archaeological and historical sites from the era of the Bosnian Kingdom (1377–1463). It consists of 34 stećci situated on a strategic ridge alongside a road that served as a vital regional communication route during the Middle Ages. The most illustrative section of the site is the western group of seven monuments, four (or five) of which are ornately decorated with high-quality reliefs.
Scientific research and verified data—including the sensational discovery of luxury textile remains (brocade)—confirm that members of the highest nobility, specifically Grand Dukes of Bosnia, were buried here. The proximity to the medieval fortress-city of Dubrovnik further emphasizes the importance of this necropolis as a family mausoleum for the nobility who governed these lands. The monuments are distinguished by their massiveness and artistic craftsmanship, while their location adjacent to a recent Catholic cemetery testifies to the long-standing continuity of this site as a sacred burial ground.

The southern side of the princely stećak of Mirko Radojević (or his son) serves as an example of the monumental simplicity and stonemasonry precision characteristic of noble mausoleums in the 14th and 15th centuries. Typologically defined as a massive ridged tombstone, its sheer scale directly reflects the high social status of the deceased. Particularly striking are the edges reinforced with plastic ribbon motifs, which provide the monument with a clear architectural frame and emphasize its monolithic nature.
Mirko Radojević was the father of Duke Batić, and his role at the court of the Bosnian kings was pivotal to the rise of the Mirković lineage. This stećak, with its restrained yet powerful decoration, symbolizes the stability and authority of the nobility.

The southern side of the stećak of Grand Duke Batić Mirković bears one of the most significant epitaphs in the history of medieval Bosnia. The text carved into this monumental ridged tombstone is written in Bosnian Cyrillic (bosančica) and serves as a primary historical source of inestimable value.
The inscription not only identifies the deceased as the Grand Duke of Bosnia but also contains precious data that allows for the reconstruction of the political, social, and cultural conditions during the period of the Bosnian Kingdom (1377–1463).
This epitaph is very important for understanding the role of the nobility at the Bosnian court and the territorial organization of the medieval state. The monument's position within the Kopošići necropolis, in close proximity to the fortress-city of Dubrovnik, highlights the power and prestige of the Mirković lineage. The precisely carved letters and the formulations used in the text testify to a high level of literacy and a developed legal terminology of the era, making this stećak one of the most important written monuments of the "noble heritage" (plemenita baština).

This monumental ridged stećak with a pedestal is one of the pivotal monuments of the Mirković noble graveyard. Based on its positioning and scale, it is identified as the resting place of Duke Mirko Radojević or his grandson. Archaeological excavations conducted in 2015 directly beneath this monument yielded one of the most significant discoveries in Bosnian medieval studies.
The research uncovered a headless skeleton, but what captured global attention was the brocade cloak in which the deceased (either Mirko or his grandson) was wrapped. The cloak was crafted from elite material with threads wrapped in gilded silver, providing irrefutable proof of the royal-like splendor and power of the local nobility. As fragments of this precious textile are now housed and preserved in the National Museum of BiH in Sarajevo, this monument is no longer merely a silent witness to stonemasonry but key evidence of the luxury of Bosnian courtly life and funeral customs in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Iako manjih dimenzija, spomenik prati stilsku obradu većih stećaka, naglašavajući emotivnu i društvenu važnost očuvanja porodičnog kontinuiteta čak i u tragičnim okolnostima rane smrti nasljednika.

The eastern side of the small child's stećak offers a moving insight into the private lives of the medieval nobility. Despite its dimensions, the monument was crafted with exceptional care from a single stone block with two massive pedestals—a rare and prestigious form reserved for the inner circle of the aristocracy. Its surface is decorated with twisted ribbons and spiral motifs, which stylistically align perfectly with the visual language of the rest of the necropolis. This craftsmanship suggests that the same master stonecutters who worked on the monumental markers of Duke Batić and Princess Vukava were also commissioned for this child’s grave, emphasizing the unbreakable bond and equal honor paid to all family members.

The northern side of Princess Vukava’s ridged stećak represents one of the most complex examples of medieval Bosnian ornamental architecture in stone. The monument is richly decorated with precisely executed spiral and rosette motifs, framed by twisted ribbons. Of particular fascination is the upper section of the monument, which features faithful imitations of a wooden roof, including details that simulate roof beams and shingles. This architectural approach transforms the heavy limestone monolith into a symbolic "eternal home," reflecting the belief in the continuity of life after death. As the wife of Grand Duke Batić Mirković, Vukava was honored with this monument, one of the artistically most refined burial markers in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On this surface, the stonecutter skillfully combined architectural elements with ornamental sequences, maintaining symmetry and aesthetic harmony with the rest of the monument.

The pedestal further emphasizes the verticality and monumentality of the marker, while the upper section, shaped like a gabled roof, symbolizes the "eternal home." This composition, characteristic of the burial sites of the nobility, ensured the monument's dominance within the necropolis landscape.

Its surface is entirely filled with rich reliefs, making it a supreme example of courtly art that blended architectural elements with delicate ornamentation, befitting the high rank of the Bosnian nobility.

It is believed to be the resting place of their child, indicating the familial nature of this section of the necropolis. HTMLText_74402E33_C919_7043_41E5_EFAFB4E89A9C.html = The Northern and Western Faces of the Princely Stećak in Kopošići
During the 2015 excavations, beneath this multi-ton stone, archaeologists encountered a scene worthy of an ancient tragedy: they discovered the skeleton of a high-ranking nobleman (either Mirko or his grandson) buried without a head. Despite being decapitated, the deceased was laid to rest with the highest honors, wrapped in a lavish cloak of heavy brocade with threads wound in gilded silver.
The stark contrast between a brutal death—likely an execution or a casualty of war—and the royal splendor of a fabric that survived the ages makes this stećak one of the most intriguing monuments of medieval Bosnia. The fragments of that cloak, now preserved in the National Museum of BiH, serve as silent proof that these lands were once home to a nobility whose power and wealth rivaled the great courts of Europe.

This inscription is a primary historical source of exceptional value for reconstructing the political, historical, and cultural conditions of medieval Bosnia. Duke Batić was a pivotal figure at the court of the Bosnian kings, and his stećak in Kopošići, preserved near the fortress-city of Dubrovnik, stands as a testament to the power and prestige of the Mirković noble lineage.

HTMLText_4FAB9454_D709_3CFD_41D2_DBA675B5F368.html = Kopošići
Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Kopošići, a village near Ilijaš in central Bosnia, is home to a significant necropolis of stećci, medieval tombstones notable for their cultural importance. Situated on a hill near the historic town of Dubrovnik, the necropolis features eight prominent stećci at its center and approximately 30 additional monuments descending the slope. Among the notable burials is the great Bosnian prince Batić Mirković, whose monumental stećak, weighing over nine tons, bears a valuable epitaph rich in historical information.
The inscription reveals that Batić was interred by his wife, Vukava, on his estate and served as a prince under Bosnian King Tvrtko II Kotromanić, who ruled during the early 15th century. Local tradition holds that Vukava’s monument lies to the right of Batić’s, and possibly that of his father, Prince Mirko Radojević, a noteworthy figure in his own right.
The necropolis dates back to the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Artistically, Batić’s stećak is remarkable, measuring over two meters long with intricate ribbon designs that embody both monumentality and harmony. Esteemed art historian Đoko Mazalić considers it one of the most beautiful examples of stećci.
However, the stones in Kopošići now face deterioration, with cracks threatening their integrity. Urgent conservation efforts are necessary to preserve these significant historical monuments and ensure their survival for future generations.

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Međutim, kamenje u Kopošićima sada propada, a pukotine ugrožavaju njihov integritet.
